The Downingtown Library is graciously hosting an exhibit of STEM Academy student artwork. Most of the art on display won a ribbon of excellence at the STEM Academy Arts Night show in March. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our students’ creativity in the community. Congrats to the students and thank you to the Library Board of Directors for supporting the arts in our schools!
Please join us for an artist’s reception on October 13, 2016, 5:30pm – 7:00pm.

The mural began in the spring when the Class of 2017 IB Visual Art students met with local artist, Adrian Martinez for brainstorming and design development. The idea was to have the mural welcome visitors and students into the school, and also represent the many facets of our unique learning environment. Mr. Martinez then developed students' ideas into a fully realized mural design. Over the summer, many students spent time tracing and painting the mural onto the unusually long wall. Today, an awesome group including alumni and incoming freshmen worked on bringing the mural to its almost finished state. There are some final touches yet to be added, but we are all very excited about the many ways this mural ties together Science, Technology Engineering, Math and of course Art!
Rebecca Krauss, junior and Renee Duplin, sophomore were recognized at the April school board meeting for having their artworks selected to hang in the Watson Staff Development room at Downingtown Area School District's Trestle Place central office. Students from grades K-12 were honored to have their work on display for the next two years and enjoyed a reception and recognition at the board meeting. Congratulations to our STEM artists and all the student artists!

Juniors in IB Visual Art started their day in the rain at the Wharton Esherick Museum where they explored Esherick's wood shed and expressionist-inspired outhouse before entering his studio/home perched on a hillside near Paoli, PA. They enjoyed seeing every inch of Wharton's home and studio filled with hand-carved wooden furniture, sculptures and memorabilia. Even the twisting wooden stair case was carved by Esherick to fit the unusual space.
Onward to the West Collection at SEI Investments, where we toured through investment bankers' collaborative workspaces in order to view the artwork on display throughout SEI. The private collection boasts some recognizable names in contemporary art. One inspiring piece was Sharks by Yong Ho Ji, affectionately known as the Shark Tank (pictured above and below), a sculpture of sharks made from recycled automobile tires that hangs enclosed in glass just outside the Risk Management Team's office. On this day, they had just finished an interview in the Shark Tank! Other memorable works include Composers by Long-Bin Chen, busts of classical composers carved from stacks of books, and a sculpture made with a 3D printer that plays with perspective, perception and space. Invitation designed by senior, Aabha Vora Join us for the opening reception of the fifth annual Academy Arts Night! March 16th 6 - 8pm STEM Academy Knowledge Commons The evening will feature the senior exhibitions of the class of 2016. These students have worked tirelessly for two years in International Baccalaureate Visual Art to build a body of work. The culminating experience of curating their own show is not only a highlight of their high school visual art course work, but is also an IB Internal Assessment. Students select their best work to demonstrate their technical skills, formal qualities and conceptual qualities. They decide the best way to arrange the work and consider the audience's experience for maximum visual impact.
The Year 1 IB Visual Art students (juniors) will also exhibit their work, as a way of warming up their curatorial skills for next year. Sophomores and freshmen in Art in the 21st Century I and II will also show their best work from this school year. We have some great judges lined up to jury the show, including two Art Educators and a Graphic Designer. They will award ribbons for the most cohesive and visually impressive senior exhibitions and individual pieces by category, such as painting, drawing, photography and sculpture. Achievement ribbons will also be awarded to individual art works which will then receive the honor of being displayed at the Downingtown Library in the fall. STEM Academy teachers and staff will also vote on a select handful of works to be displayed prominently in the main office of our building. The works that receive this honor will be on display for the next school year. We are proud to present this evening of art, light refreshments and live music for a fifth year! Please join us and bring your family. The arts are alive at STEM!
In December and January, Art in the 21st Century 1 students learned some new observational drawing skills. They created studies using continuous contour lines, negative space and value. We listen to music on days when we're focused on our project. This day, we tried something different...
This year's Senior Mantle was designed by Christian Overton.
Here's how he describes his design: "The triangles show that each and everyone of us is unique. On the outside we are just another senior class, but like this design when you look closer, you see there is much more to us than that. We are creative, innovators, collaborators, team leaders...the Class of 2016 is represented by the Alpha Wolf." The Senior Mantle is a Downingtown High School tradition since 1908. Each senior class votes on a design that represents their class. The designs adorn a ceremonial graduation robe which is worn by the outgoing Senior Class President and passed onto the shoulders of the next class president as a symbolic gesture during senior awards night. Each year, art students from all three high schools submit entries to the Greeting Card Contest. Congratulations to this year's winners from the STEM Academy!
