During the second week of school, students in all the visual arts classes collaborated in small groups to create cyanotypes that express the theme, "inheritance", as part of World Cyanotype Day. The 19th century photographic process involves preparing a surface such as fabric with a light sensitive solution. Objects are placed on the fabric, and the areas exposed to sunlight turn Prussian blue, leaving the areas with objects remaining white or light blue. A small group of seniors helped hang a selection of cyanotypes at the Downingtown Library as part of a rotating high school exhibit for the first marking period. More cyanotypes are on view in the Knowledge Commons. Art classes also voted on the cyanotype that best expresses the theme, and that image will be submitted to World Cyanotype Day's online exhibition.

On the afternoon of Friday March 13th, 2020, I left school knowing that our Art Show wasn't likely to happen. Everything was ready. Artwork was matted, senior exhibitions were planned. The following Monday we should have begun hanging the show, but as we all know, the world changed. No art show in 2020. No art show in 2021 (we had to do a modified exhibition of seniors' work and a virtual art show). It is with great anticipation (and some nerves) that I announce the return of our traditional art show! On view March 17 and 18 for students during the school day, with an in-person evening reception on the 17th! Friends and families are welcome to join us from 6-8pm in the Knowledge Commons.
Students in Art in the 21st Century I & II finished their observational drawings and paintings after completing studies in line, negative space and value.
This year, the class of 2021 voted on twenty entries to the annual Senior Mantle Emblem Design Contest. The winning design was created by Polina Ilyin, an art student since her freshman year. According to Polina, "the colorful symbol of the wolf represents a bright future for the diverse and driven class of 2021". The design will officially represent the senior class a variety of forms. It will be on the cover of the commencement program, be featured in the yearbook, be given to seniors as commemorative lapel pin, and most importantly, will be added to the Downingtown Senior Mantle. The Mantle is a ceremonial graduation robe that features an emblem representing each class since 1908. Polina's design will become part of this extraordinary Downingtown legacy. Congratulations, Polina!

Please join us for two upcoming exhibitions of STEM Academy student artwork! 24 students have artwork on display through the month of October at the Downingtown Library. Our annual autumn exhibit at the library includes the work of students from grades 10 and 11 that was recognized for its artistic achievement (purple ribbons) at the STEM Academy Arts Night in March. Thank you to the Downingtown Library for this opportunity to show our artwork in the community. Most of the artwork is on view in the "programs room" (please ask a librarian to take a peek if the doors are closed), with a few 3D pieces on a book shelf in the main area. When you visit, be sure to support the library by browsing the Book Sale and taking a few good reads home! Marcus Djuhadi! His design received the most votes from the senior class. Marcus says the design represents the Class of 2018’s interconnectedness, unique perspectives and intertwining paths—symbolized by varying colors and crossing lines. This year’s design will be used to represent the senior class in official documents, in the yearbook, at graduation and as the mark of their legacy within STEM Academy and Downingtown history. Congratulations Marcus! On Tuesday, October 17th, nationally recognized artist, Adrian Martinez spoke to International Baccalaureate Visual Art classes for our first “Artist Talk” of the year. Martinez, a Downingtown resident is a painter in the Western European tradition whose work has graced the walls of the White House, the Bush Presidential Library, the Chester County Historical Society, the Downingtown Library and our very own walls here at the STEM Academy, among many others. Last spring and summer, he worked with STEM art students in the class of 2017 to design and paint a complex mural that spans over sixty feet in length. During his Artist Talk on Tuesday, he shared his story and the unique path that his life as an artist has taken. We are fortunate to have such an accomplished artist as a member of our community. We thank Mr. Martinez for sharing his morning and artwork with us.
